Faculty news: Maher teaches in Germany

Dr. & Mrs. Maher in front of Mont St. MichelDr. T. Michael Maher, department head, is now in Regensburg, Germany, teaching at the University of Regensburg with a Fulbright Award. This Fall, Maher taught seminars on Media and Democracy, and American Environmental Writing. The Fulbright Awards were created in the aftermath of World War II as a way of exporting American ideals to the world. Fulbright Awards also bring scholars from other countries to American universities.

While in Regensburg, Maher is living in a 13th-century building owned by the university and renovated into apartments for visiting faculty. Regensburg itself was recently named a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the extraordinary condition of its old town, which includes 1,200 medieval buildings.

Maher has also been invited to present papers or guest lectures at the universities in Munich, Passau, Bamberg, Trier and Bayreuth, as well as the Conrad Adenauer Foundation in Berlin.

"I want to thank the UL Lafayette administration for granting me sabbatical support for this Fulbright year," Maher said.

Maher will return in July 2008.
