but also a vital property of life."

Interested in majoring in Communication?

Communication is inherent to the human condition and central to modern life. Whether through written, spoken, nonverbal, or electronic means, people send, receive, and exchange countless numbers of messages in any given moment. Most people spend six or more hours a day engaged with some form of mass communication. Communication is vital to the expression of ideas, the sharing of information, and the advancement of society.

The faculty and staff of the Department of Communication at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette invite you to learn more about the exciting opportunities we offer in Communication studies. Join future broadcasters, advertisers, journalists, public relations practitioners, and organizational/interpersonal professionals studying with a nationally recognized faculty who bring enthusiasm, expertise, and professional experience to the classroom. We hope to hear from you soon.

Choose your area of concentration
Communication majors pursue degrees in Interpersonal and Organizational Communication, Journalism (Print), Broadcasting (Radio and TV), Advertising, or Public Relations. Each program enables students to obtain a sound educational foundation in other disciplines including humanities, behavioral sciences, arts, mathematics, and the physical and biological sciences while studying their specialized coursework.

Study with an outstanding and innovative faculty

Communication students study with an exceptional faculty who bring years of professional experience and impressive accomplishments in communication research to the classroom.

Learn to use the latest academic and professional software and new technologies

Communication majors have the opportunity to learn and apply some of the latest technology in the field. In addition to class offerings such as desktop publishing, Web design, TV news production, and DVD production, students have access to the Burke-Hawthorne lab equipped with late-model G5 Macs with flat-panel monitors and a high-res color laserwriter. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), an important software tool for communication research, is available to students in the Wharton lab. Broadcasting majors gain hands-on experience in digital technology in six new editing suites equipped with the same Avid software that is widely used in the television industry.

Get work experience before you graduate

In their senior year, Communication majors participate in the Department's dynamic internship program, which allows students to gain on-the-job experience at advertising or public relations firms, television or radio stations, or a variety of businesses or nonprofit agencies - both in the Lafayette area and out-of-state - for academic credit. The Department boasts an active alumni association chapter that helps students find jobs.

Be a part of our growth

The University will break ground on a new wing to the Department's building, Burke-Hawthorne Hall, in Fall 2005, nearly doubling the current space. Communication students will enjoy taking classes in one of the newest facilities on campus.
